The FloWatcher integrated permanent production monitoring system provides continuous measurements of pressure, temperature, flow rate, and fluid density. Two high-precision quartz pressure gauges in a mandrel measure the pressure drop across a venturi nozzle, which is directly proportional to the square of the fluid velocity. A third high-precision quartz pressure gauge measures fluid density.
The system is initially calibrated in single-phase flow, which yields a linear relationship between the pressure drop across the venturi and the pressure drop across the gradiomanometer. If at any time after the calibration has been made data points are seen to be falling away from the calibration line, then there has been a change in fluid density. Detecting this change allows early detection of water breakthrough and, thus, early intervention.
