Transportation of Hazardous Materials

Our commitment to transportation safety regarding hazardous materials or dangerous goods

SLB maintains a robust program dedicated to ensuring the transportation safety of hazardous materials or dangerous goods (DG). Our approach encompasses specific regulatory compliance, endorsements, and comprehensive training requirements to mitigate risks effectively.

Our commitment to safety extends to product and service-specific standards that address hazardous materials. These standards align with both local and international regulatory mandates. Movement of hazardous materials adheres strictly to regulatory requirements and internal standards, covering various aspects, such as proper identification, packaging, secure transport, predeparture inspections, marking, labeling, and required shipping documentation.

Key internal controls outlined in our standards include

  • ensuring personnel involved in preparing hazardous materials for shipment comply with SLB and regulatory training requirements
  • implementing proper identification and correct packaging practices
  • conducting secure transport of hazardous materials
  • performing predeparture inspections of load securement
  • adhering to international and local transport regulations for marking, labeling, packaging, and placarding based on the specific hazardous material and mode of transportation
  • placarding SLB vehicles transporting radioactive materials and ensuring contract or common carrier vehicles are correctly placarded
  • conducting road hazard assessments and selecting routes to reduce transportation event consequences
  • prohibiting transportation of materials in leaking or damaged containers and within the driver or passenger area of a vehicle
  • complying with import and export movement regulations, including licenses, for hazardous materials
  • qualifying SLB vehicle drivers through internal defensive driving and safe driving certifications, practical tests, and skill assessments specific to the vehicle type
  • ensuring third-party vehicles used for DG transportation and their drivers meet qualification, licensing, and condition standards
  • conforming to International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP) requirements and local regulations for all vehicles involved in DG transportation
  • initiating efforts to equip all DG transportation vehicles with automatic fatigue and distraction detection (AFDD) devices.

Hazard communication is a critical aspect of our transportation practices, involving the dissemination of information on product hazards to all stakeholders, especially emergency response personnel. Communication methods include shipping papers, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), labels, markings, placards, and emergency response information.

When outsourcing transportation to land transport contractors (LTC), SLB ensures these contractors meet defined HSE requirements, accurately assess associated risks, and manage them adequately. The LTC driving and journey management (JM) procedure helps determine the level of operational control SLB applies based on exposure and risks. Contractual terms and conditions, driving and journey management, and regulatory compliance requirements are defined by SLB for LTCs, aligning with IOGP Report 365 and local regulations. Transportation of hazardous materials is considered medium or high risk, and LTCs are managed according to these standards.
