Cameron – Building on a Century of Innovation 1920–2020

Jim Abercrombie and Harry Cameron designed the world's first blowout preventer (BOP) in 1922. It was used to contain well blowouts, revolutionizing the industry with new standards for safety and well control that are still used today.

In 1945, Cameron pioneered the industry's first 10,000-psi production tree.

In 1960, the CAMERON T30 Series fully welded ball valve was introduced. Today, it is considered the industry standard and is one of the world’s most popular ball valves for pipeline applications.

Cameron's industry-leading U surface ram-type BOP (front) and TL offshore ram-type BOP (rear) were introduced in 1963 and 1986, respectively.

Cameron was the first to engineer surface wellhead systems rated to 30,000 psi and 450 degF and qualified per API Spec 6A Appendix F.

DrillPilot equipment sequencing software, first deployed in 2017, increases the safety and performance of drilling operations.

NATCO DUAL FREQUENCY electrostatic treater improves throughput for oil dehydration and desalting applications with more efficiency as compared with conventional electrostatic technologies. Today, the latest design evolution upgrades the power unit and process response controller for digital access: optional remote monitoring, control, and actionable insights to increase uptime and improve operational performance.

Celebrating 100 years of Cameron innovation

In 1920, Harry Cameron and James Abercrombie founded Cameron Iron Works. Two years later, they invented the world’s first blowout preventer (BOP)—an innovation that not only revolutionized oil and gas safety standards but also became the foundation of one of the industry’s most iconic companies and brands.

Over the century, Cameron Iron Works was renamed Cameron International and went on to design, manufacture, and service the most comprehensive and reliable portfolio of pressure control equipment in the industry.

Today, as a SLB company, Cameron remains committed to solving the industry’s most sophisticated problems and is helping forge a new era of environmental stewardship and safety in an ever-evolving industry.
