Using production logging to accurately determine the flow of oil, gas, and water phases is fundamental to developing optimal production strategies and designing remedial workovers. The Flow Scanner™ horizontal and deviated well production logging system was designed to provide stand-alone, real-time, three-phase flow interpretation in highly deviated, horizontal, and near-horizontal wells.

  • Multiphase flow profiling in nonvertical wells
  • Identification of fluid or gas entry in multiphase wells
  • Identification of liquid in gas wells
  • Detection of fluid recirculation
  • Measurement of mixed and segregated flow regimes
  • Independent measurement of gas velocity in multiphase horizontal wells
  • Detection of heavy phase recirculation downhole
  • Unambiguous flow profiling in nonvertical wells, regardless of phase mixing or recirculation
  • More accurate flow measurements than possible with conventional logging tools in highly deviated and horizontal wells
  • All sensors measure simultaneously and at the same depth
  • Full three-phase holdup answer from the same depth
Model of the Flow Scanner system arm that serves as a caliper for area measurements.
The arm of the Flow Scanner system extends to the full diameter of the production tubing, serving as a caliper that provides the area measurements needed to calculate flow rates.
  • Stand-alone, real-time, three-phase flow interpretation
  • Direct, localized measurement of phase velocities
  • Three-phase flow rates computed in real time using dedicated algorithms
  • Short length for running in wells with high dogleg severity
  • Scanning across the vertical axis for more accurate detection of phase interfaces
  • Software optimization and real-time data display from all 19 sensors
  • Caliper and relative-bearing measurements for continuous sensor location
  • Combinable with PS Platform™ production services platform and other cased hole logging tools

The Flow Scanner system serves as a caliper in the wellbore, providing the area measurements needed to calculate flow rates. Five miniature spinners measure fluid velocity while electrical and optical probes measure localized water and gas holdups along with flow properties on the lower side of the wellbore. This design enables the system to measure velocity variations that cannot be detected using a single, centered spinner.

The Flow Scanner system can measure mixed and segregated flow regimes, including direct independent measurement of gas velocity in multiphase horizontal wells. The system detects water using six low-frequency probes that measure fluid impedance, and the resulting profile accurately represents the flow regime in the wellbore.

Gas detection is facilitated by six GHOST™ gas holdup optical sensor tools that are sensitive to the fluid optical refractive index. Optical probes enable a local gas holdup measurement without requiring calibration because their signals are binary. Together, the optical and electrical probes deliver a full three-phase holdup answer from the same depth interval.
