MDT modular formation dynamics tester

Quality fluid samples and highly accurate reservoir pressures

minus

Capture actionable formation pressure and permeability measurements

The MDT™ modular formation dynamics tester takes real-time flowline resistivity measurements at the probe module. It discriminates between formation fluids and filtrate from water- and oil-based muds—excluding formation fluids from sample recovery until an acceptably low level of contamination can be recovered.

The faster collection of high-quality, representative samples gives you real-time understanding of hydrocarbon properties at reservoir PVT conditions while the MDT tester is still in the borehole. So you can modify your formation testing program based on the most accurate data available—and avoid extended subsequent production testing or lengthy additional PVT laboratory work.

Built-in flexibility and modularity help you understand your reservoir more efficiently.

  • Formation pressure measurements and fluid contact identification
  • Formation fluid sampling
  • Permeability measurements
  • Permeability anisotropy measurements
  • Mini-drillstem test (DST) and productivity assessment
  • InSitu™ Geomechanical Profiling
  • Minifrac testing

Unprecedented formation testing in a fraction of the time

Precise measurements, flexible design

The MDT tester can be configured with a wide variety of probes, modules, and other SLB measurement technologies to meet operational objectives and optimize reservoir understanding. Our reservoir evaluation experts meet with you to design the module arrangement and specify test procedures from the wide variety of productivity and permeability tests along with fluid extraction and sampling, usually achievable in a single run of the toolstring.

Insights, delivered

We monitor in situ pressure and fluid measurements in real time to ensure that job objectives are met. Our multidisciplinary interpretation experts then work with you as needed to leverage this powerful data, such as building predictive reservoir fluid models to determine compositional gradation and reservoir connectivity across the field.

Redefine what’s possible with connected, intelligent system-level optimization.

Enabled by Wellbore Insights on Delfi

Often, the clear picture from wellbore data only appears once processed data are put into context. Sometimes you don’t know if you met your data-acquisition objectives until after the window of opportunity has passed. Other times, you may be waiting on an answer to plan your next operational steps. Wellbore Insights on Delfi™ provides advanced interpretation and contextualization of data in real time, so you can make better, faster decisions. Interpretation workflows that took days are now completed in hours.

What does reservoir fluid geodynamics mean for oil and gas?

Initiated and led by SLB Fellow Dr. Oliver C. Mullins, the oil and gas industry has introduced a new technical discipline called reservoir fluid geodynamics (RFG) to enhance the understanding and management of reservoir fluids over geologic time. RFG offers a comprehensive approach similar to "structural geology" for rocks, focusing on how fluids and rock structures evolve together. This new discipline helps operators address uncertainties in reserve estimates, productivity, and reservoir connectivity, and the Ora platform is a key enabler. Learn from Dr. Oliver Mullins how RFG is becoming an essential tool in reservoir management and development.
