Wireline intervention maximizes efficiency on drillship workover

An operator in the Gulf of Mexico improved job efficiency on a drillship workover by implementing the SLB polymer-locked wireline cable and wireline intervention service. Running and pulling speeds improved compared with conventional wireline practices, line changes were minimized, and the operator gained confidence for future operations.

For this drillship operation, the operator needed to recomplete a deepwater well after a subsurface safety valve failure. The objective was to pull the upper completion and clean out, then run the intermediate and upper completion, install the tubing hanger, set the production packer, and test the completion. The primary goal was to maximize the efficiency of operations without compromising safety and regulatory compliance.

During the intervention review, SLB highlighted that operations were alternating between slickline and wireline, which led to unproductive time for several required line changes. To address this point, the operator used StreamLINE iX™ extreme-performance polymer-locked wireline cable, which is an innovative coax cable jacketed with polymer for improved mechanical characteristics. This cable enables deployment of both wireline and slickline runs including downward and upward jarring. The slickline runs also benefit from wireline telemetry to measure gamma ray, CCL, and head tension and incorporate a release device.

To close the isolation ball valve, the operator used ReSOLVE™ instrumented wireline intervention service, which provides real-time monitoring, dynamic tool control, and verified downhole actuation. The service conveyed the slickline standing valve, magnet, pump bailers, pulling tool, and smart shifting tool. The ReSOLVE anchor–linear actuator placed the junk basket.

A total of 17 runs flawlessly executed all pressure control equipment changes while ReSOLVE service provided depth correlation to monitor the pump bailer progress, which gave the operator additional confidence to proceed with pulling the deep-set plug. The StreamLINE iX cable and SLB operators successfully completed the scope traditionally split between slickline and wireline, increasing job efficiency by minimizing line changes. Additionally, running and pulling speeds improved compared with conventional wireline.
