Inductive coupler

Contactless power and data transmission for enhanced well completion and monitoring

Applications

  • Intelligent completions and permanent monitoring at the formation face in
    • multitrip completions (land or deep water)
    • multilateral wells
    • extended-reach wells with single or multiple laterals
    • wells equipped with electric submersible pumps (ESPs)
  • Wells with anticipated upper completion workovers, such as ESP changeovers
  • Permanent monitoring as part of the Metris Eclipse™ B-annulus PT monitoring system

Benefits

  • Seamless workover operations: Facilitates disconnecting upper and lower completions to reduce workover cost and complexity
  • Long-term reliability: Maintains electric connectivity between upper and lower completions over the life of the well
  • Simplified installation: Requires no downhole rotational alignment, making it ideal for multitrip installations in deviated and horizontal wells and reducing overall rig time

Features

  • Contactless transmission of electric power and high-rate bidirectional telemetry between upper and lower completions
  • Immunity to electromagnetic noise from ESPs
  • All-metal fully encapsulated design that prevents liquid or gas ingress and ensures long-term reliability
  • Concentric connection design that eliminates the need for rotational alignment during stinger insertion into the receptacle
  • High-grade, corrosion-resistant metals to provide durability for continuous operation

How it improves performance

Our downhole inductive coupler addresses the challenges associated with traditional physical connections. It facilitates electric intelligent completions by enabling upper completion workovers without the need to retrieve the lower completion. This feature ensures the integrity of critical downhole hardware and helps maintain uninterrupted electric functionality.

In extended-reach laterals—where it may be necessary to push, pull, and rotate the completion to overcome friction and reach target depth—the inductive coupler enables the lower completion to be run on rotating drillpipe. The reduced friction eliminates risks of control line damage and tubing buckling, removing the limitations on wellbore length that confront single-trip completions.

How it works

Installed as part of the tubing string, the coupler uses a single electric line to connect surface equipment with downhole monitoring and control systems. This simplifies installation, reduces friction, and requires only one wellhead penetration.

The inductive coupler can be run in single- or two-trip configuration. It consists of two main subassemblies:

  • The female receptacle is installed in the lower completion and forms the electric interface.
  • The male stinger is attached to the upper completion and mates with the female receptacle to establish electric connectivity.

During a workover, the stinger is easily disconnected and the upper completion retrieved without disrupting the lower completion.

What it replaces

Traditional wired connections between completion stages, requiring complex workover techniques that often result in a sidetrack or necessitate complete intelligent hardware retrieval.
