Model-Driven Interferometry

Prediction and subtraction of complex high-order scattered surface waves from land seismic data

WesternGeco texture hero

Removing scattered surface waves from land seismic data is one of the most challenging aspects of seismic processing because of the complex nature of wave propagation in the near surface.

Our model-driven interferometric ground-roll attenuation provides a solution using a modified form of seismic interferometry to predict and subtract scattered ground roll, surpassing conventional velocity discrimination techniques such as f-k filtering.

Addresses common acquisition geometries

Model-driven interferometry (MDI) modifies the classical interferometric method by replacing one of the interferometry inputs with a model of the direct ground roll. As a result, an estimate of the scattered ground roll can be made directly between a source and a receiver instead of between two receiver locations. This offers a significant advantage over the conventional interferometric method, which only works efficiently for certain types of impractical acquisition geometries.

The result? We are now able to estimate and remove complex higher-order scattered surface waves for many common, modern 3D land acquisition geometries that enable the formation of appropriate enclosing boundaries from existing sources in the survey.

Improves confidence in final interpretation

The flexibility of MDI compared with conventional interferometric methods enables us to effectively attenuate the scattered ground roll, improving the signal response for prestack and poststack data. Better signal continuity, reduced noise contamination, and signal distortion increase confidence in your final reservoir interpretation and inversion.
