Understand the compatibility of your brine with DLE flowsheet using our proprietary tools
The demand for lithium is not only increasing but is also projected to triple between 2025 and 2030. This rapid surge requires a significant boost in lithium supply. However, current production methods, such as hard rock mining and conventional brine mining, are often inefficient, costly, time-consuming, and environmentally impactful. New processes and technologies such as direct lithium extraction (DLE) can be the answer. But is your lithium brine suitable for this solution?
For owners of existing lithium brine resources or companies looking to acquire such resources, a key question is the quality of the brine. This is also crucial for portfolio owners who desire to compare brine quality between two different brine assets to decide which one is better for processing.
Brine quality refers to the composition of lithium concentration in the brine and various other elements like sodium (Na), carbon dioxide (CO2), magnesium (Mg), sulfates (SO4), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and others, which collectively form the total dissolved solids (TDS). Understanding the behavior of these elements in a DLE flowsheet is fundamental for mitigating risks associated with brine resource quality.
SLB’s lithium brine technical calculator provides initial guidance on assessing brine quality and its computability with DLE flowsheet.
The calculator evaluates the brine through three stages: pretreatment, DLE process, and post-DLE process. It then assesses the applicability of DLE process across these stages, from raw brine to battery-grade lithium carbonate (Li2CO3).
Additionally, advanced analysis and benchmarking services are available, complemented by personalized consultation.
The initial lithium brine technical calculation is a starting point. As you progress on DLE technology derisking of your asset, SLB can provide domain expertise to offer guidance on the design and optimization of well-to-product integrated lithium solutions.
