RSS with ultrashort PDC bit improves drilling footage 89%

An optimized bottomhole assembly equipped with PowerDrive Orbit G2™ RSS and AccuStrike™ short-makeup drill bit enabled a major operator in the Wolfcamp Formation to drill a challenging horizontal well profile while mitigating shock and vibration. The short-makeup PDC bit helped increase average footage 89%, save 14 h of drilling time, and improve erosion resistance 60% compared with offset wells.

To achieve sustainable operations in the Permian Basin, operators must maximize reservoir contact while drilling longer wells faster—and in fewer runs.

However, the Wolfcamp Formation consists primarily of interbedded siltstone and dolomite, an environment of excessive shock and vibration that often leads to slower ROP and costly, time-consuming downhole tool failures. The operator sought to minimize vibration-related impacts while drilling extended-reach horizontal wells with 8° to 10°/100-ft curves and 1.5- to 3-mile laterals.

SLB conducted an in-depth analysis of drilling data using the DBOS™ drillbit optimization system and IDEAS™ integrated dynamic design and analysis platform. After reviewing the simulations, SLB recommended the PowerDrive Orbit G2 RSS and the AccuStrike short-makeup drill bit equipped with Aegis™ 3D-printed armor on the blade face. Every element of the BHA—from the cutting structure, to the bit body, to the dogleg severity capabilities—was engineered for optimal drilling performance, stability, and durability in the operator's target zones. The unique, one-piece design of the AccuStrike bit reduced makeup length by 30%, contributing to higher build rate, reduced lateral and axial shock and vibration, and increased footage.

SLB achieved the planned well trajectory while drilling 11,401 ft in one run. This saved 14 h of drilling time and improved drilling footage by 89% compared with offset wells, ultimately reducing nonproductive time and carbon footprint.

Subsequent modifications included spray hardfacing to extend bit life, which showed better dull grading and a 60% improvement in erosion resistance compared with offsets.
