Extracting downhole lost components for BP | SLB

Recovering lost components to create a clean path to production

Azerbaijan, Asia, Offshore

Following the failure of a downhole tool during the completion of an offshore well in Azerbaijan, the operator had to recover any lost components to proceed with the job. To solve the situation, the operator leveraged both the MAGNOSHOE™ specialized magnet and MAGNOSTAR™ high-capacity magnet from SLB to extract the debris downhole, clear a path to production, and continue operations with no further lost time.

The operator needed to quickly recover the lost components. Because large debris can be difficult to mill and circulate back into the fluid stream, it must be retrieved mechanically. In unforeseen situations when a fishing operation is necessary, high-strength magnet tools are highly effective for extraction

The operator used the fit-for-purpose MAGNOSHOE magnet in combination with the MAGNOSTAR magnet from SLB. The MAGNOSHOE magnet is engineered with the latest and most powerful magnet technology available, enabling it to withdraw large and abnormally shaped ferrous debris that has fallen to the bottom of the wellbore and cannot be circulated back into the annular path of a conventional drillstring magnet. The MAGNOSTAR magnet is specifically designed for large-volume cleanup applications in high-torque strings.

An innovative BHA arrangement was formulated to ensure a single trip to recover the lost components. The BHA was run in hole (RIH) with the magnet while closely monitoring for any indication of tagging. This included an unexpected section of the tong die and unidentified spring wire, clearing the way for operations to continue successfully without incurring further lost time.

BP quickly recovered lost components downhole, enabling them to continue operations without incurring further lost time.
Using the MAGNOSHOE specialized magnet and MAGNOSTAR high-capacity magnet, the operator cleared a path to production.
