By replacing multiple formulations with the custom-engineered scale inhibitor SI-41047 that is equally effective but has a wider range of application, an operator achieved immediate and long-term savings, simplified logistics, enhanced safety, and lowered its carbon footprint.

A major operator in the Danish sector of the North Sea was using three different scale inhibitor formulations across five offshore platforms. The chemicals were continuously injected topside to mitigate the risk of carbonate scale; additional amounts were added during reinjection of spent triazine-based H2S scavenger, which increases the risk of calcium carbonate scaling. Discharging the spent scavenger into the sea was not advisable because of the consequent environmental impact. The operator wanted a more cost-effective and simplified scale management strategy.

In response, SLB formulated and qualified SI-41047, a neutralized carboxylic acid copolymer that combats both carbonate and sulfate scaling. It is based on the same active component at the same level of activity as the inhibitors that were in use. Consequently, it is equally efficacious and hence, the volume of inhibitor required to maintain performance remained unchanged. However, it is more cost-effective, has an improved HSE profile, and meets performance and compatibility requirements across all installations. Moreover, unlike the other inhibitors, which were blended in Norway before transportation to Denmark, SI-41047 can be blended in Denmark, reducing the carbon footprint and further lowering costs.

After an extended field trial, the new product was implemented across all five platforms. The operator saves more than USD 215,000 annually in direct chemical costs, in addition to achieving long-term savings and reducing risk associated with logistics and supply. Examples of these savings include reduced tank rental and simplified planning of tank certifications and routine maintenance because only one product is in use instead of multiple different ones.
