Wireline intervention isolates deepwater well for BOP replacement

On short notice, an IOC leveraged integrated wireline technologies to install two temporary pressure barriers during construction of a deepwater injection well.

In the final stages of constructing a deepwater injection well, an IOC needed to replace the drilling BOP with a vertical deepwater tree. This required the installation of two temporary pressure barriers. However, after the suspension valve failed to open hydraulically, the operator needed to find an alternate isolation method as quickly as possible.

In 5 days, the SLB wireline team mobilized all necessary equipment and personnel for the ReSOLVE™ instrumented wireline intervention service. First, SLB used the ReSOLVE smart shifting tool to open the suspension valve using the valve’s contingency profile. Then, the intervention team used the ReSOLVE service with the TuffTRAC iX™ intelligent extreme wireline tractor to overcome the well’s challenging restrictions, tortuosity, and deviation. The TuffTRAC iX tractor pushed the 700-lbm BHA through multiple diameter changes to reach the bottom of the upper completion.

SLB used a 5½-in SIMultra™ retrievable bridge plug to establish the second pressure barrier. With a 4.1-in OD, the plug was able to pass through the well’s restrictions to enter the telescoping seal assembly. Once the SIMultra plug reached the desired depth, the ReSOLVE setting tool set the plug using nonexplosive setting force in just 7 minutes. Real-time monitoring confirmed plug placement, enabling the IOC to continue deepwater operations with minimal downtime.

SIMultra bridge plug incorporates a proprietary hybrid metal-elastomer seal for reliable isolation.
The SIMultra retrievable bridge plug incorporates a proprietary hybrid metal-elastomer seal that provides a full metal contact for reliable setting, sealing, and retracting in challenging conditions.
