Cement evaluation required for large casing size

Statoil needed to evaluate cement placement to meet the requirements of the NORSOK D-010 standard for two independent cement bond measurements across the well barriers behind the casing. The casing size in this well on the Norwegian Continental Shelf ranged from 13 3/8 to 20 in. Although sonic logging with the CBL-VDL could be conducted across the casing size range, the maximum casing size for conventional ultrasonic tools was 13 3/8 in.

PowerEcho service clearly indicated the top of cement and evaluated cement placement and casing integrity in 20-in casing to meet regulatory requirements.

Expanded capabilities for annular evaluation and casing inspection

PowerEcho annular barrier evaluation service expands application of the pulse echo technique for characterizing the annulus for casing diameters up to 22 in and casing thicknesses to 1 in. The superior-quality ultrasonic measurements result from a new transducer and mechanical design that efficiently provide full azimuthal coverage. The transducer overcomes the challenges of attenuation of the pulse echo signal in heavy muds to resolve casing and cement information for almost any cement type and well fluid. PowerEcho service also employs enhanced wellsite processing to deliver the field answer product in two hours or less.

Cement and casing integrity evaluation without an additional descent

By running the CBL-VDL and PowerEcho service in the same toolstring, Statoil was able to obtain complementary independent cement placement and bond measurements in casing ranging in size from 13 3/8 to 20 in to meet the requirements of the NORSOK D-010 standard without needing an additional descent in the well.

Details

Challenge: Evaluate cement placed behind casing with sizes ranging from 13 3/8 to 20 in to fulfill requirements of the NORSOK D-010 standard.

Solution: Deploy new PowerEcho annular barrier evaluation service in combination with a cement bond log (CBL) and Variable Density log (VDL) to obtain the required independent measurements across well barriers behind the casing.

Results: Satisfied regulatory requirements by confirming cement placement behavior and top of cement in casing up to 20 in while simultaneously evaluating casing integrity.
