During off-bottom reaming operations, the OptiDrill service identified backward and chaotic whirl motions, enabling the operator to mitigate these dangerous downhole motions in real time. Using data from the OptiDrill service, the operator drilled to section TD without incident.

Details

Formation type
Postsalt and salt

Application
Deepwater

Hole size
8 1/8 in

Background
An operator drilling in formations with stength and friction factor contrasts was enlarging a vertical borehole from 181/8 in to 21 in. Occasional BHA failure and associated NPT had been experienced, and the operator needed to improve the reliability of the BHA to drill the section to TD without incident.
