The HydraGlyde system enabled the operator to manage cuttings onsite, eliminating haul-off to a disposal site, thereby reducing cuttings disposal costs, which included trucking costs. Overall cost of all three wells dropped by up to 36% on average when compared with the cost of wells drilled with OBM. The average footage of the HydraGlyde system wells consistently exceeded offset OBM wells drilled in the same area by no less than 157 ft/d and as much as 928 ft/d.

Background

An operator wanted to eliminate using OBM without sacrificing drilling performance for lateral sections in three wells within a field. Disposal costs were part of the evaluation of WBM systems considered. Schlumberger proposed using the M-I SWACO HydraGlyde system. The main component used would be HydraSpeed ROP-enhancing primary lubricant with freshwater to sustain ROP and planned drilling days. To enhance hole cleaning without sacrificing ROP, a mild rheology agent was included.
