SLB in Africa
Africa's balancing act is our balancing act

Africa’s balancing act is our balancing act

SLB has been part of the Sub-Sahara Africa story for almost a century. We work alongside our partners, customers and communities in thirty countries, operating across over 100 locations. We are focused on the development of local talent in the communities in which we operate. Nearly 90% of our employees are local, working in their home country.

Not limited to the continent, we also employ over 4,000 Africans outside of Africa – working in our manufacturing, technology research, operations and global headquarters around the world. Developing technological expertise, business acumen, and knowledge to return to their home country with.

We encourage all our employees to make a difference in their local communities. With paid volunteer service, our employees give back through events such as beach cleanups in Senegal and road safety workshops in Gabon.

In addition, SLB invests in the local infrastructure where we work. In Congo, we made improvements to a local maternity facility impacting the lives of over 14,000 women and children and in Uganda, we built and repaired 13 water wells to ensure a supply of clean and safe drinking water.

We collaborate with academic institutions for the development of our neighbors and communities. The company focus on education and training runs from school level to higher education and beyond to the workplace.

The SLB Excellence in Education Development (SEED) Program provides STEM education for young children who are particularly active in Africa. Schlumberger volunteers tour local schools to share their expertise and passion for science. In 2022, more than 1,000 students in Africa participated in SEED workshops and events.

In 2004, the Schlumberger Foundation launched the Faculty for the Future program. Aimed at reducing the gender gap in the field of science, over 900 women from 93 countries have received Faculty for the Future fellowships for PhD and Post-Doctorate STEM research programs, including over 100 Nigerian women.

We prioritize our spending with local sourcing including over 4,000 local vendors and providing technology access for businesses in the region. Prioritizing partnerships with local companies for the supply of essential products and services is another pillar of SLB’s in-country value approach. This supports the creation of competencies that can be transferred to a range of other economic sectors, while at the same time promoting supply chain decarbonization.

SLB acknowledges the urgent need for a global shift to low-carbon energy systems and the search for sustainable alternatives to meet the world's energy demands.

In the quest for a just energy transition, SLB is leveraging innovation and digitalization to bridge the gap between environmental responsibility and energy access. Our End-to-End Emissions Solutions (SEES) has helped develop a tailored methane monitoring frameworks for Eni’s African facilities, optimizing measurement technologies for local conditions.

We are actively forging partnerships across industries to innovate technologies in five key areas: carbon solutions, hydrogen, geothermal and geoenergy, energy storage, and critical minerals.

Together, we are driving energy innovation, for today and tomorrow. For Africa, for a balanced planet.
