The cost tracking capability is designed around the concept that on a day-to-day well operation, service companies and operators know what services and equipment are being used and what the contractual costs are. Through the application of cost codes and quantities, this will then allow a day-to-day overview of the expenditure on an operation against a pre-determined AFE. DrillOps reporting provides operations managers with a tool to monitor and analyse all costs. Data entry is intuitive; with automatic carry-forward options for recurring costs and the ability to select costs from the approved AFE or available cost codes.

Upstream operations mean being tasked with making multiple decisions on a daily basis which in turn requires teams and individuals to synthesize data and information from a number of sources. They therefore need relevant information immediately to hand with a service that gives them oversight of existing operations and an immediate visual cue as to their current status. This is Greenday. Operational intelligence to hand on smart phones and tablets.
Greenday is fine tuned to the needs of teams and individuals. Each will have specific critical criteria requiring a timely (<1 hour) response and which act as triggers for the Greenday status cue. The diagram below shows KPI’s, NPT and other key context.
A relatively simple concept, ‘Lean’ means maximizing value while minimizing waste – in short, more from less. The ultimate goal is to offer a perfect value creation process that has zero waste.
Optimizing the data flow from the point of acquisition to the delivery of analytics and knowledge extraction, removing where possible all manual data entry and processing. Now, with readily available real-time sensor data in WITSML and OPC-UA formats, DrillOps reporting has taken the initiative by applying the principles of ‘Lean Automation’ to reporting services to deliver LAR - ‘Lean Automated Reporting’. LAR, replacing a time-consuming manual process with an automated, data-driven service.
This has been achieved by:
Harnessing the power of WITSML/Real-Time (RT) data sources, Fixed Text Remarks and Rig State detection to capture, process and deliver a range of reporting data subsets (fluids, surveys, BHA’s) with little or no intervention at the wellsite.
Using the Anova analytics suite to deliver reports, analyses and KM services directly from the data.

IDS has built in capabilities to import (and export) data from multiple WITSML objects and multiple sources. The diagram below shows that that the majority of the DDR can built from any reasonably comprehensive WITSML database (shown at right in the diagram below).
While automating the numeric subsets of the report from WITSML’ static’ objects is relatively straightforward, identifying and coding operational ‘activities’ presents a range of novel challenges. Using raw WITSML data and applying the RSD/OSD and FTR logic described above, it is now possible to automate the building of a significant majority of the DDR including the ‘Activities’ section. As noted above, the real time 1 Hz or 0.2 Hz ‘log’ data is translated into instantaneous ‘rig states’ which are then compiled into specific ‘operational states’ for insertion into the ‘activities’ screen of the IDS DrillNet or TourNet services. The real time drilling parameters are then re-processed to populate and deliver the relevant ‘Fixed Text Remark’ for each activity, as below, which shows the manual and LAR versions for the same 24hr period.
DrillOps reporting Lessons Learned is an integrated solution that allows the operator or drilling contractor to capture and share knowledge and experiences – both good and bad - across the whole operation, irrespective of location and discipline. A lesson is created on-the-fly during operations or during after-action reviews. In the operational planning phase, the global Lessons database can be mined and analysed for valuable insights to ensure that a lesson, once learned, does not become an incident repeated. Adding a lesson during operations automatically connects the relevant activity description and coding to the lesson. Because the service is an integral part of the wider DrillOps reporting ‘DataNet’ reporting services eco-system, ‘activities’ are captured along with key NPT information and a cloud of meta-data (rig, well, day, operation type, etc.) to ensure that each lesson can be searched and discovered by both event specifics and by searching for the broader context. A lesson without close-out is likely a lesson lost. As a lesson is created, the DrillOps reporting LL service automatically notifies a pre-identified Responsible Party via email ensuring timely review and action. The responsible party is required to define ‘post lesson action’ and, at lesson closure, a Closure Destination is added to further learning in the future. The DrillOps reporting LL DB comes with the industry’s most advanced search and recovery tools. Built around ‘Elasticssearch’ - a world-leading search and analytics solution - the user can build-out a query simply by concatenating search terms to find the most relevant lesson(s). In the example below, the terms ‘lost circulation blocked line’ return 497 results with the most relevant at the top. A hot link leads back to the original lesson. The end game is to reduce risk and deliver safe operations globally.

Drilling Performance Monitoring (DPM) delivers the most detailed of view of operational performance data available - the ultimate near real-time and post-well analysis tool, allowing the operator or drilling contractor to determine precise event durations for all the key operational aspects of the well.
Merging time-sequenced drilling data with the off-line daily report data means that key rig and crew performance metrics (tripping times, connection times etc) can be tracked and analysed to the nearest second. The process starts with ‘Operational State Detection’ (OSD) by which parameters within a WITS0 or WITSML (real-time) data stream are processed to determine ‘rig-state’. These rig-state values are stored in the IDS database and are used in both real-time and at the end of the well to generate a complete drilling performance overview with over a 100 KPI’s.
Depending on data availability, a wide range of KPI’s are available that cover all aspects of drilling ops, rig and crew performance. :

1: DPM and Anova analytics
Anova simplifies data mining, dynamic benchmarking and analytics. A self-service approach allows users to analyse multiple sources of data through one single integrated application, making it possible to interrogate and cross-reference reported real-time data alongside dynamically benchmarked information derived from reporting data with visualisations delivered to dashboards and ‘GreenDay’. Anova makes it possible to deliver business intelligence from operational reporting and real time data. Examples below
1: Rig State summary (daily, weekly, by hole section, by well, between wells, by rig, between rigs)
2: Connection duration (by time/depth, by hole sect, by well, between wells, by rig, between rigs)
3: Drilling weight to weight connections with probability
Our mission is to extract every last cent of value out of the data. Anova Data Sciences (ADS) has been established to apply statistical and probabilistic analysis to the Anova Database (ADB) and the Anova Community Database (ACDB). Using the ‘R’ statistical analysis package and other data mining tools, ADS is focused on:
Second only to data quality, the biggest obstacle standing in the way of digitalization is managing and accessing the multiplicity of document formats, data types and databases that comprise the Upstreams’ day-to-day information ecosystem. To tackle this problem, IDS has developed a number of web-delivered and on-premise ‘Bridges’ to put the right information at the fingertips of the manager, engineer or explorationist. Each Bridge has a simple UI coupled to a fully coded back-end to parse, process and deliver data with the minimum of set-up time and without intervention.
WITSML™ is an upstream initiative to provide open, non-proprietary, standard interfaces for systems transmitting, exchanging or receiving data. Managed and supported by Energistics, an industry supported non-profit, WITSML is the industry standards reference for the transmission of data from rig-site to the offices of oilfield service companies, integrators and operators. It is also used to share information among partners, vendors and government agencies.
SLB has for many years been an advocate, supporter and contributor to the WITSML Standard. All data in the IDS data model that are present in one or more WITSML Objects are available for our clients via a WITSML Interface. As part of our drive to automate reporting wherever possible, we ingest WITSML Data hosted by 3rd parties directly into DataNet for all the common WITSML objects, e.g. BHAs, Surveys, Fluid, Reports, etc.
However, with the exception of the ‘log’ and ‘trajectories’ objects, many WITSML objects remain unpopulated. Recognising that this limits the options for report automation, DrillOps reporting has developed FileBridge. With FileBridge, we are able to convert standard service company PDF’s (mud reports, BHA summaries etc) into data which we use in our reporting services and make available either in our the DrillOps reporting WITSML instance or post to a 3rd Party WITSML server. This is all done in just a couple of minutes without the need for any human interaction other than posting the file.
Bi-directional Connectivity with the EDM
The EDM Bridge is a bi-directional interface that allows DrillOps reporting to make a connection to an EDM instance even if the EDM is an on-premise installation and the DataNet instance is in the Cloud. This design facilitates use of data from EDM in DataNet but also updates to the EDM database from the daily reporting cycle in DrillNet and other DrillOps reporting services. At the planning stage, plan time and trajectory in Landmark’s ‘WellPlan’ and ‘Compass’ are pulled into the DrillNet reporting service at the start of the well, along with additional catalogue mapping for BHA/Tubular components. When drilling commences, daily reports generated in DrillNet are processed directly into the EDM database offering a significant reporting upgrade while maintaining the integrity of the EDM environment. The EDM Bridge can also be used to analyse EDM Data using ANOVA where it can be combined for instance with Drilling Performance Data.
Automatically Generate your IADC DDR Plus
The new IADC DDR Plus is now fully digitized, thanks to the work of the IADC Advanced Rig Technology (ART) Data, Controls and Sensors (DCS) Subcommittee in 2019 (Paper SPE-199664-MS). This, combined with the advanced five-layer Operations code-set, allow the DDR Plus to be automated by leveraging rig state detection (RSD) and further algorythms to compact those states into meaningful operations - operational state detection (OSD). Leveraging other existing sources of data, and the various DrillOps reporting Bridges, can largely automate the DDR Plus.
Where required DrillOps reporting supports direct or file based data export for regulatory reporting or agency reporting, for example the Norwegian Pretroleum Directorate (NPD), The Dutch Ministry of Energy and similar agencies.
IDSBridge is the tool that provides API access to data within the IDS Data model. The tool uses a documented query language to retrieve data and is accessible from most BI and Database tools over a web connection.
From document to data
On any given operating day, a rig will generate up to 30 key documents in Word, Excel or PDF. These reports come from a range of service companies and other contractors with many of them describing or defining mission-critical operations. However, the content is often re-entered (retyped…) into other database and reports; typically a BHA is retyped four or five time, a mud report two or three times. DrillOps reporting, through FileBridge, is committed to capturing the report at source and rendering it as data in a single action. FileBridge ingests documents in Word, Excel or PDF from either a dedicated email inbox or via a secure drag-and-drop interface. The content is then parsed, processed and delivered to both the Drillnet/LAR reporting services and as WITSML data to a WITSML store, as data for analysis and storage. No more re-typing and no more multiple versions of the truth. With the document content now in WITSML format, the data is ready for sharing - at the rig, in the office, globally.
