Brownfield, greenfield, and frontier exploration investment opportunities across Egypt
On 26 December 2022, Egypt opened diverse new exploration opportunities covering 12 blocks across basins and plays onshore, offshore, and in deep water. This includes the less-explored Nile Delta region and frontier exploration in the Eastern and Western Mediterranean Sea regions. The licensing round includes
These blocks offer oil, gas, and condensate exploration and production opportunities. The unique geographic location, market size of Egypt, and established infrastructure position the country to lead the import and export of oil and gas in the region and attract new investment and competition from both national and international investors.
The EUG is Egypt’s fully integrated digital E&P platform to attract global investment. It provides instant, remote access to all subsurface and bid round data for the second digital bid round to accelerate the decision-making process. Rich subsurface datasets include an available regional poststack merges of existing legacy seismic surveys covering 35,000 km2 in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea (blocks North Port Fouad, South Nour, and East Port Said) and 25,000 km2 in the Western Desert.
The enhanced volume provides an improved and holistic understanding of the Eastern Mediterranean regional geology and underexplored play mapping. Seamlessly merged volume enables regional stratigraphic correlation and structural mapping of different prolific basins and lead identification.
The EUG has completed an accelerated 3D prestack depth reprocessing project that includes the merge and processing of 12 input legacy surveys from field tapes to create a homogenized depth volume across 12,000 km2. The enhanced volume shows improvement over signal-to-noise ratio, maintains amplitude fidelity for AVO studies, and improves the imaging of the stratigraphic and structural traps in the pre- and post-Messinian sequences. The evergreened volume enables better delineation of potential leads extending across the exploration blocks and open areas offshore Egypt.
Become a member of the EUG and access comprehensive bid round content and regional insights now. The EUG provides secure access to more than 2,500 TB of seismic data and 70 years of production data, including evergreened subsurface data. With reimaged and integrated data at your fingertips, you can quickly and more effectively screen and evaluate exploration opportunities across Egypt.
Access the EUG portalIn the Eastern Mediterranean, the enhanced prestack depth merge volume was used to generate regional depth maps for the key regional seismic events in the area to support explorers with regional studies and lead identification exercises. Advanced signal processing and earth model building workflows and latest migration algorithms were applied to enhance the data quality to delineate and derisk potential leads. In addition, regional cross sections were constructed to help identify and develop play concepts across a seamless seismic dataset that facilitated tying different geological domains efficiently. The regional depth maps were used to generate thickness maps, rms amplitude maps, and lead maps. The key well data in the region has been compiled and conditioned for further petrophysical analysis.
The Mediterranean blocks offer a unique opportunity to explore new exploration frontiers, with hundreds of producing gas fields. The blocks enable exploration of various play types from the Nile Delta cone to the Eastern and Western boundaries of Egypt’s Mediterranean deep water.
In the Western Desert, the EUG provides integrated regional evaluation from basin scale to prospect level to effectively support bid round decisions. This type of evaluation is a key enabler for understanding the prospectivity and value of bid round blocks and global market dynamics. Understanding the well data in the region is critical for delineating the petroleum system elements. Data from more than 40 wells in the area have been edited and underwent rigorous quality control procedures for evaluating opportunities faster. Integrated formation evaluation identified possible promising zones based on wireline and mud logs. The study integrates borehole images with available core data and thin sections to analyze and interpret reservoir lithofacies. Regional structural mapping with basinwide seismic attributes analysis has been completed.
In 2022 EGAS, the EUG, SLB, and partners—with the support from the University of Aberdeen Center for Energy Transition—undertook the first carbon capture and sequestration screening project in Egypt. The objective of the project was to conduct an integrated feasibility study, screen the potential sweet spots for carbon storage in the shallow water offshore the Nile Delta Basin, and prove the concept of identifying such areas.
The study area is located in the shallow-water (<100-m water depth) Nile Delta Basin, reaching from Port Said and the eastern offshore surrounding area close to the Suez Channel entry in the east and to Alexandria in the west. The study area is defined by operating areas, available data, and existing field information as well as the shoreline to the south, within a maximum inline distance of 60 km from shore. The study area was split into two phases (roughly equal Eastern and Western parts of the Arab Organization for Industrialization).
