Reservoir formation

Accurate optical measurement of hydrocarbons and water content

The CFA composition fluid analyzer module of the MDT modular formation dynamics tester optically scans the contents of the flowline to ensure that representative, high-purity samples are collected. Pumping time for both downhole fluid analysis (DFA) and sample acquisition for laboratory analysis is minimized by using the CFA analyzer to monitor contamination levels in real time.

How it works: Optical absorption spectrometry and fluorescence measurement

As single-phase reservoir fluids flow through the CFA analyzer, optical absorption spectrometry of visible and near-infrared light determines concentrations in the gas phase in real time:

  1. methane (C1)
  2. ethane, propane, butane, and pentane (C2–C5)
  3. heavier hydrocarbon molecules (C6+)
  4. CO2
  5. H2O.

This compositional information also gives you the condensate yield, or gas/condensate ratio (CGR), which is the inverse of the GOR. Simultaneous measurement of fluorescence emission identifies the fluid type and ensures that samples are single phase, acquired above the gas condensate dewpoint.

Near-infrared optical absorption spectrometry and fluorescence emission measurements are used to determine gas-fraction concentrations and to identify fluid types, respectively, as fluids flow through the CFA module.

Quantitative CO₂ measurement

If gas identified on logs as hydrocarbon is actually primarily CO2, the value of the reservoir fluid is reduced. High CO2 concentrations have the potential to render production uneconomical owing to the cost of treatment and safety measures.

The CFA analyzer measures the CO2 weight-percent concentration, mitigating the potential for misinterpretation of log data.
