Ridged diamond element bit
The AxeBlade™ ridged diamond element bit enables significant ROP improvement across various applications while also enhancing steerability in directional wells. Field tests and extensive BHA runs repeatedly demonstrate typical ROP improvements of up to 29%, and as high as 84%, compared with premium PDC cutters with the same bit design. Performance of the AxeBlade bit is attributed to the Axe™ ridged diamond element strategically placed across the bit blade. Axe elements feature a unique ridge-shaped geometry that combines the shearing action of a conventional PDC cutter with the crushing action of a tungsten carbide insert (TCI). The Axe element’s crushing and shearing action achieves 22% deeper penetration, resulting in higher instantaneous ROP with the same weight on bit and rpm as conventional PDC cutters. Its ridge-shaped geometry creates a 70% thicker diamond table, providing greater frontal impact resistance. This enhances durability and maintains maximum ROP throughout the run, even in dull conditions.
Building on this success, the Axe Ultra™ ridged diamond element was developed. The enhanced interface between the diamond table and substrate provides increased strength and wear resistance. The Axe Ultra element combines shearing and crushing actions for efficient cutting and heat dissipation.
To tackle more drilling challenges, the Axe TR™ triple-ridged diamond element was developed, increasing impact strength by 15% and improving cutting efficiency by 29% in carbonate formations and 4% in sandstone formations.
Adapting benefits of the ridged shape continues with the Axe SR™ scribe-ridged diamond element. It combines the classic Axe element ridge with a scribe shape, improving cutting efficiency by 34% compared with flat PDC cutters and 18% compared with the original ridged element.
