Hart Energy’s E&P recently announced two of Schlumberger’s technologies have received its prestigious 2021 Meritorious Award for Engineering Innovation (MEA). StrataBlade concave diamond element bits and high-temperature variable-bore rams (VBRs) were selected as the top technologies for innovation and achievement in the awards program’s Drill Bits and Onshore Rigs categories, respectively.
“E&P has consistently honored technical innovation that allows our industry to overcome seemingly impossible challenges,” said Len Vermillion, Editorial Director of Hart Energy. “The Meritorious Awards for Engineering Innovation reflect the best of the best in technological advancement.”
“We are honored to be recognized by our industry peers for technological excellence,” said Jesus Lamas, president, Well Construction, Schlumberger. “As with all our technologies, the goal is to exceed the needs and expectations of our customers. This was certainly the driving force during the R&D process for StrataBlade bits and high-temperature VBRs—two technologies which help make our customers’ operations more efficient and safer.”
StrataBlade bits by Smith Bits, a Schlumberger company, provide a new solution for customers to drill medium-strength and interbedded formations while increasing ROP to reduce rig time and well construction costs. These bits leverage strategically shaped polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) cutter technology and are the newest addition to the Smith Bits Blade Family of unique 3D cutting element bits.
High-temperature VBRs provide a seal to a range of diameters. They are suited for H2S service per NACE MR0175 and compatible with U surface ram-type BOP. The ram packers lock into place and are not dislodged by well flow. Additionally, a large reservoir of packer rubber ensures a long-lasting seal under all conditions and increased range of operating temperatures.
The E&P MEAs is an annual awards program recognizing new products and technologies that demonstrate innovation in concept, design and application. This year, E&P recognized technologies in 15 categories across a broad range of disciplines.
