Schlumberger and PetroChina recently released the second edition of their co-authored technical reference book entitled Application and Development of Geosteering and Rotary Steerable Systems Technique. A ceremony to commemorate the release was held in Beijing on January 20, 2022 and attended by representatives from PetroChina and Schlumberger.
The book’s first edition was published in September 2012. Since then, PetroChina’s exploration and development activities have reached increasingly complex formations and reservoirs, including shale gas, tight oil, and extra-deep pre-salt reservoirs. The contents of the book have been updated to reflect the latest measurement-while-drilling (MWD), logging-while-drilling (LWD), and rotary steerable systems (RSS) technologies and applications that are being used to address these challenges.
“The collaboration between PetroChina and Schlumberger in China has existed since the early 1980s,” said Zheng Xinquan, vice president, PetroChina E&P Company. “Working with Schlumberger over the past several years, we have overcome various challenges—such as drilling extra deep vertical wells in areas with high dip structure—and realized continuous drilling performance improvement in shale gas and oil development. The updated version of this book captures the drilling steering technologies and techniques that have helped make these achievements possible.”
“The latest edition of this book is the product of years of collaboration with PetroChina,” said Jesus Lamas, president, Well Construction, Schlumberger. “We have many new fit-for-basin technologies and digital solutions in development, and we look forward to continuing to collaborate with PetroChina to implement new technologies that help them achieve their business objectives.”
The updated edition includes several technology success stories, many of which have now been adopted as industry benchmarks in the regions where they have been applied. The book is available now for purchase on the CNPC Bookstore.
