Global deployment of well integrity solution for Equinor

Equinor chose Wellbarrier solutions to solve their standardization and auditability challenges

Equinor has successfully implemented the Wellbarrier™ well integrity life cycle solution in their drive to create standardization and auditability across their organization. The solution has yielded significant efficiency gains, of 300-400%. In 2024 alone they created 7300 schematics and saved 25,000 engineering hours, compared to their previous workflow.

“The adoption of the Wellbarrier solution in Equinor has significantly reduced the time drilling and well engineers spend preparing well barrier schematics and has contributed to a decrease in overall well planning time. Additionally, and in-line with Equinor’s strategic value of ‘Always Safe’, the software has allowed standardization across all assets of both the well barrier schematics and the verification process of these, thereby ensuring safety and quality in execution.”

Kris Alfthan, principle engineer D&W tech digital implementation and analytics, Equinor

Equinor was looking to streamline well barrier schematic creation across their organization. To do this several issues had to be addressed. The first being the time-consuming schematic creation faced by asset teams due to highly manual processes. Additionally, the format for schematics was inconsistent across various assets, owing to a lack of version control. This introduced challenges in maintaining schematics going forward, alongside data integrity challenges.

Before and after use of Wellbarrier schematic creation

Equinor chose the Wellbarrier solution to solve their standardization and auditability challenges, implementing a phased global rollout across different technical disciplines. Well barrier schematics are now being produced in a consistent digitized format, enhancing collaboration across the entire organization. The solution is fully auditable, providing complete version history and strong data integrity, meaning that schematics are easily maintainable throughout the well lifecycle.

There are currently over 1000 users within Equinor’s global organization and since the project began over 15,000 schematics have been created, representing 45,000 engineering hours saved. 95% of surveyed users in the organization reported that using the Wellbarrier solution was more efficient than their previous method and increases in efficiency of 300-400% were reported.

In addition, the Wellbarrier solution has been integrated with Wellcom, Equinor’s internal planning and reporting system. This improved digital connectivity and has driven further efficiency gains through the seamless transfer of data.

The success of this project has been recognized by the industry with Equinor and SLB being jointly awarded two OWI Global awards in relation to it–these being Best Example of Collaboration in 2023 and Best Example of Digital Innovation in 2024.
