Using the CTDirect Ultraslim LWD Array Resistivity™ coiled tubing logging-while-drilling (LWD) service enabled the operator to unlock geosteering and formation evaluation in underbalanced coiled tubing drilling (UBCTD), gaining full visibility into well placement and optimizing the well’s net-to-gross ratio.

A major operator in the Middle East was concerned that the lack of LWD measurements during UBCTD was causing them to drill blindly. They were relying solely on limited mud logging data and gamma ray measurements to make decisions about well placement, which hindered their ability to optimize the well's net-to-gross ratio. To overcome this issue, an improved method was needed to gather vital information necessary for effective formation evaluation and geosteering.

Using the CTDirect Ultraslim LWD Array Resistivity service, the operator gained key information for formation evaluation and geosteering to accurately position the well and ultimately, increase gas production. The formation was evaluated by comparing resistivity and gamma ray data from nearby offset wells, which helped estimate reservoir porosity. Geosteering was achieved through a model-compare-update process that used the resistivity and gamma ray data from these offset wells to guide drilling. By gaining deeper insights into the geological conditions, the operator was able to successfully achieve precise wellbore placement and reduce NPT, leading to maximum hydrocarbon recovery.

Graphs show good correlation between LWD data and the offset wells data.
A strong correlation is seen between the data from the CTDirect Ultraslim LWD Array Resistivity service and the data from three offset wells within the same target formation, confirming the accuracy and reliability of the LWD measurements.
