Maintain tight directional control through the magnetic zone of exclusion and monitor stick/slip, shock, and vibration.
The well profile chosen for this field test consisted of a 2D build with a 4.4°/100-ft tangent section and a 3D turn and drop with 4°/100-ft dogleg severity (DLS). The operator wanted to improve drilling efficiency with a point-the-bit RSS.
The PowerDrive Xcel™ RSS was deployed with the auto-curve component of the autonomous downhole control system. Auto-curve was recommended because it adjusts the steering ratio automatically based on the required DLS and toolface, eliminating the time required to send and receive downlinks on the RSS downhole. Auto-curve reacts faster to formation changes and reduces the risk of deviation from the directional plan.
Auto-curve was engaged while drilling the 8½-in section, and 3,480 ft were drilled in downhole autonomous mode (93% of the section). The operator achieved a center-to-center distance of up to 10 ft from the planned well trajectory, and the RSS auto-curve adjusted to geological changes automatically. The operator continued drilling similar hole sections in auto-curve mode and showed a 32% improvement in ROP compared with offset wells drilled using the conventional manual mode.
