PETRONAS Carigali Sdn. Bhd. operates a handful of small platforms in offshore Malaysia, in the Malay Basin area, located in the South China Sea. Most of these platforms were designed with limited crane capacity of a maximum five mega-ton load and small deck space area. After many years of production, the fields began experiencing sand production, water cut and/or large skin factors, thus requiring well interventions and treatments such as matrix stimulation, water shut off or sand clean out to sustain and/or enhance production. Coiled tubing intervention is the most effective method to achieve these goals, but can be a difficult task with limited platform facilities. This case study confirmed that CT operations can be cost-effectively performed with the support of a work barge on platforms that cannot accommodate all of the necessary equipment.
