背景

Equinor wanted to improve low ROP while drilling the 16-in curve sections of prior wells in a North Sea project. The section would drill through a milled window with potential for washout and wellbore instability due to unconsolidated sands and swelling green clay. These compromised conventional drill bits that use flat PDC cutters, which hinder ROP due to severe bit balling as long ribbons of cuttings material pack off the bit cutting structure.
