Working in the Srednebotuobinskoye field of eastern Siberia, Taas-Yuryakh Neftegazodobycha wanted to drill the 8 5/8-in production interval in the Tolbachan horizon, which includes trap rock. The hard trap rock causes catastrophic wear to conventional PDC and roller cone bits. Drilling the trap interval, including tripping the BHA for bit changeout, consumes 60-80 hours, or 38%-50% of the total run time. Taas-Yuryakh Neftegazodobycha sought a robust drill bit to drill from the casing shoe to the bottom of the trap in a single run without incurring NPT or bit failure.
