Previous drill bits lasted only 600 to 800 ft. To increase bit footage and ROP, Schlumberger recommended running an AxeBlade bit incorporating Stinger elements. The unique geometry of the cutting elements features thicker diamond tables to improve impact strength and wear resistance. Using the bit with advanced cutting elements, Parex Resources drilled 1,656 ft of the interbedded formation at a rate of 18.2 ft/h–26% faster than a nearby offset well. In addition, the operator saved 2 days of rig time by reducing the number of trips required to change worn bits.

Llanos Basin
Onshore Colombia

背景

The 12 1/4-in section in the Llanos Basin consists of an upper claystone interval followed by high-impact interbedded formations composed of sandstone, siltstone, and shale. Offset wells used four bits to drill the entire section—with three bits in the interbedded zone alone. Parex Resources wanted to reduce the number of bits and runs required to drill this challenging section.
