An operator sought to drill both slimhole and robust wells in two sections rather than the standard four sections through heterogeneous formations. Heterogeneity and greater drilled length increased frictional forces, detrimentally affecting ROP, directional control, and quality of LWD data. Casing and liner running operations were also affected at increased cost.
Prior to adding Intra LUBE encapsulated lubricant, numerous short wiper trips and reaming were performed to improve torque and vibration values and increase the drilling rate with no success. After treatment to a robust well, a reduction in torque was observed and it was possible to continue drilling without changing the BHA.
